Requirements
Must be comfortable with throwing continuously for 3-4 hours. That means being able to prepare clay (wedge, ball up) and able to center fairly quickly. Able to work with weights from 400g-2kg and up to 4kg (optional)
Description
The aim of this workshop is to throw and move clay in a controlled, even and efficient manner. Being able to control where the clay is displaced, storing it in the rim (for stability or future gallery/lid/spout work) and lifting clay from the corners of the pots instead of robbing the base or the rim for height. The best shape for this will be cylinders which we will mostly focus on (shaping demos can be shown towards the end).
Starts with detailed demonstration by Quay with smaller amounts of clay, focusing on the “pinch and lift” method for the first lift. We will be throwing for most of the time, aiming to complete each pot within 3-4 pulls before cutting in half and assessing. As the workshop progresses, we will slowly move up to more and more clay. Shaping demonstrations will also be covered if time allows and depending on skill level.
